Backups

More about backups and data recovery here.

  • Beneath the heading, there are up-to-date details about the last backup (for example: 2.12.2015 - Backup Complete Successfully).
  • Server Backups: recommended settings: Full backup = Weekly and Count of system backup archives = 3 or more. After each successful backup, an info email is sent to the system email address entered in the admin_email key in Settings Syst. settings General.
  • Router Backups: textual backups - all routers, binary backups - only MikroTik routers
  • Save Backups via FTP: recommended. It is important to keep backups in more than one place. We also recommend that you turn Secure FTP on so that all backup transfers are encrypted.

Main functions:

  • Creation of incremental or full backups of the ISPadmin system (/data/support/*, graphs, scripts, router backups ...)
  • Creation of incremental or full binary backups of the mysql database.
  • Creation of backups of the directories defined by the user
  • You can upload backups to your ftp server. Transfers through ftp can be encrypted.

The basic structure of directories is as follows:

  • db - binary backups of the SQL database (the /var/lib/mysql/ directory)
  • db_dump - dumps for individual databases
  • etc - backups of the /etc directory
  • graph - backups of graphs of transferred data (these backups take up the most space) Physical location: /data/support/ispadmin/client_images.
  • ispadmin - backups of the /data/support/ispadmin directory (system data)
  • scripts - backups of the /usr/local/script/ispadmin directory (binary scripts and data)

icon info2 By default, incremental backups are not activated. FULL backups of the whole system are made daily.

alert icon To be able to completely restore data from your backups, you have to have a FULL BACKUP and all the INCREMENTAL BACKUPS SINCE THAT LAST FULL BACKUP!

Backup system You can deactivate/activate server backups with the help of this checkbox.
Backup Start Time You can set the time when backups will be created.
Count of system backup archives The maximum number of FULL system backups that can be set is 8. The script will not allow you to create more of them.
Full backup You can arrange for the system to make a full backup every day or make a full backup once a week (once a month) and create incremental backups in between. It is up to you. If you decide to use incremental backups, it will dramatically reduce the amount of time and space needed to create backups. If you make use of them, the system will back up only those files that have changed since last backup. If a file is unchanged, it will not be included in an incremental backup.
Directories that are Excluded from Backup Enter here the directories that you want to exclude from the backup process.
Other Directories Included in Backup Enter here the directories that are to be included in the backup process. For example: directories containing data about your web hosting services (if you run Lightkeeper on the same server as well).

Do backup routers configuration With the help of this checkbox, you can activate/deactivate backups of all routers (textual backups of router configurations).
Count of archived backups Here you can set how many backups of each router are to be stored.
Backup Binary Configuration of Mikrotik Routers With the aid of this checkbox, you can activate/deactivate binary backups of MikroTik routers (for these backups to work, it is necessary for a given ISPadmin user to have FULL rights, not only the WRITE right).

alert icon If you want to upload backups to the FTP server, make sure that the server works in passive mode. If it cannot work in passive mode, ftp backup tranfers will not be successful.

Send Backup via FTP Here you can activate/deactivate the transfer of backups to your FTP server.
Secure FTP (secured data transfer) Here you activate/deactivate the encryption of backup transfers.
FTP server for backup The IP or DNS address of the FTP server For example: admin.netbackup.cz or 95.0.0.215
Login name for FTP client for backups/User password to FTP for backup The username and password that will be used to log in to the FTP server.
Folder for saving backups to FTP server

Enter here the directory on the FTP server to which backups are to be saved. For example: /ispadmin/backups

icon info2 You can make use of the $DATE$ variable. If you use it, the last FULL backup (not daily incremental backup) will be uploaded to the FTP server during the backup process. If you use it, it will not be possible to make weekly or monthly backups (only full daily backups). A backup is saved to the directory whose name is generated by replacing the $DATE$ variable with concrete data in the YYYY-MM-DD__HH_MM format (e.g. 2013_04_17__13_24 ).

The Number of Backups (FTP) Here you can set how many backups are to be stored on the FTP server.
Send e-mail about any FTP error If there is an error during backup transfer, the system will send an info email about it.
E-mail name for sending of FTP errors Here you can set to which email address an error message is to be sent.
Directories Copied via FTP Here you can set which parts of backups are to be uploaded to the FTP server. This option allows you, for example, to prevent the system from uploading graphs to the FTP server, because they take up too much space (sometimes even dozens of GBs of space) and use the available bandwidth unnecessarily.

icon info2 FTP backups work on the principle of synchronisation of data between the local backup directory and the corresponding backup directory on the FTP server. That means that if you have, for example, deleted some old backup file on the ISPadmin server, this change will be reflected on the FTP server during the next backup (the file in question will be deleted there as well).

alert icon If the backup directory on the ISPadmin server is empty (for example, after you have reinstalled the server) and you make a backup, the new backup file will be uploaded to the FTP server and the old backup files will be deleted!!!
